1 gen 1994 · Ben Elton was born on 3 May 1959, in Catford, South London. The youngest of four, he went to Godalming Grammar school, joined amateur dramatic societies and wrote his first play at 15. He wanted to be a stagehand at the local theatre, but instead did A-Level Theatre Studies and studied drama at Manchester University in 1977.
First of all, put aside your pre-conceived notions about Ben Elton before viewing The Man from Auntie. The hatred people have for him personally is irrational, and even though he's not as funny these days, this series shows how incredible he was in his youth.
The Ben Elton Show (1998) followed a format similar to The Man from Auntie and featured Ronnie Corbett, a comedian of the old guard that the "alternative comedians" of the 1980s were the direct alternative to, as a regular guest.

Ben Elton: The Man from Auntie is a British television comedy series written and performed by Ben Elton. The title of the series was a play on words of the American spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., [1] and "Auntie", an informal name for the BBC. The first series aired on BBC1 in 1990.
