  1. Gerald Arpino was an American ballet choreographer, a leader of the Joffrey Ballet from its founding in 1956 until 2007. While serving in the U.S. Coast Guard (1945–48), Arpino met dancer Robert Joffrey in Seattle, Washington, and learned dancing in his spare time.

  3. Gerald Arpino was born in Staten Island, New York in 1923 and died in Chicago in 2008. He co-founded The Joffrey Ballet with Robert Joffrey in 1956 and served as Associate Director. Upon Joffrey’s death in 1988, Mr. Arpino succeeded him as Artistic Director. Mr. Arpino choreographed his first work, Ropes, in 1961.

  6. In 1993, Arpino produced America's first full-evening rock ballet, Billboards, set to the music of Prince. In 1996 he brought together an all-female roster of exciting, young choreographers to produce Legends, a ballet by women and about women. This work was followed by Legends II, another Gerald Arpino production.
