By 1795, Dwight had distinguished himself as a scholar, educator, writer and citizen, and became the obvious choice to succeed the recently deceased president of Yale College, Ezra Stiles. Dwight was inaugurated September 8, 1795, and the challenges began immediately. What confronted him on the campus was not pleasant.

Educated by his mother, a daughter of the preacher Jonathan Edwards, Dwight entered Yale at age 13 and was graduated in 1769.

The Head of Timothy Dwight College Mary Lui announced to the Timothy Dwight community on Thursday that she will be stepping down from her role at the end of the semester. Lui has been the Head of College since 2015.
