Il primo anno di guerra impose una grave perdita sulla sua cerchia famigliare più stretta: cinque dei sei figli maschi facevano parte dell'esercito russo e, nell'ottobre 1914, Oleg Konstantinovič, il quarto e più brillante dei figli, venne ferito a morte in una battaglia contro i tedeschi.

Prince Oleg Konstantinovich of Russia (27 November [O.S. 15 November] 1892 – 12 October [O.S. 27 September] 1914) was the fourth son and fifth child of Grand Duke Constantine Constantinovich (1858-1915). He died of wounds received fighting against the Imperial German Army during World War I.
Five of his six sons served in the Russian Army, and in October 1914, his fourth and most talented son, Prince Oleg, was mortally wounded fighting against the Germans. The following March, his son-in-law Prince Bagration-Muhransky was killed on the Caucasus front.
