In Kind Lady, the victim is Mary Herries (Ethel Barrymore), an art lover who becomes a patron of sorts to an impoverished artist, Henry Elcott (Maurice Evans), after he comes to call one day, admiring her door knocker.   5. The kind lady agrees to let the Abbotts stay until Ada recovers, but Henry again takes advantage of her and invites the Edwardses, friends of Ada's, to move in also to Mary's house. Shortly thereafter, Mary decides to rid herself of her unwelcome guests by telling them that she has decided to take a vacation in America, and that she plans to close down the house while she is away.

  6. Mary, a woman with good intentions, takes pity on Henry, an artist with no home. What begins as a simple offer to come inside from the cold for tea gradually turns into more. Before the unsuspecting woman knows it, Henry, his family, and his friends con their way into her home. Eventually, Mary creates a ruse to rid herself of the parasites, but they have a different plan.

  7. Kind Lady has an interesting concept at work here of a sort of home invasion concept, but I don't think it really puts the focus in the right spots. Ethel Barrymore has a great performance in at least some of her scenes, but there's a whole lot of background, context, and motivation that is either lacking or is done way too quickly to be particularly satisfying.
