L' antica cattedrale di San Paolo, conosciuta con il nome di vecchia San Paolo (in inglese Old St. Paul's ), venne iniziata dai Normanni dopo l'incendio del 1087. I lavori proseguirono per oltre 200 anni, con un incendio nel 1136 che distrusse parte dei lavori già eseguiti sebbene la cattedrale non fosse ancora terminata.
