It’s fitting that Chen Kaige kicked off TIFF’s Century of Chinese Cinema program last week in Toronto where he introduced screenings of his films and spoke about his career in two public talks.
Chen Kaige (born August 12, 1952, Beijing, China) is a Chinese film director noted for his realistic, sensitive, compassionate, and unflinching view of the lives and hopes of Chinese people. He is best known for the award-winning film Bawang bieji (1993; Farewell My Concubine ). Chen was the son of teacher and filmmaker Chen Huai’ai.
Chen Kaige is a Chinese filmmaker and a leading figure of the fifth generation of Chinese cinema. His films are known for their visual flair and epic storytelling. Chen won the Palme d'Or at 1993 Cannes Film Festival and the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award in 1993 for directing Farewell My Concubine.
