4 ago 2023 · In an interview with UK Music Reviews, Midge Ure recalled: …we were quite prepared for Vienna to come out and disappear because it was too long for the radio…However, something resonated with people and, as they say, the rest is history. Vienna famously never made it beyond No.2 on the singles charts; Shaddap You Face beat it to top spot.
Vienna is the fourth studio album by British new wave band Ultravox, first released on 11 July 1980 through Chrysalis Records. Vienna was Ultravox's first album with their best-known line-up, after Midge Ure had taken over as lead vocalist and guitarist following the departures of John Foxx and Robin Simon , as well as the group's first release for Chrysalis.
‘Vienna’: analysis. When the song was first released, there was an oft-repeated woozle or factoid that ‘Vienna’ had been inspired (at least in part) by the 1949 Carol Reed film The Third Man, which is set in Vienna. But Midge Ure later admitted he made that up, for reasons he is perhaps best-placed to answer.
This song was written by the entire band and produced by Conny Plank, a German Electro wizard. It topped out at #2 in the UK, as "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce infamously kept it from the top spot.
