Pat LaFontaine played 15 seasons for the Islanders, Sabres and Rangers. He had 468 goals and 545 assists in 865 games. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.

Pat LaFontaine was an idol of the crowds who jammed Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum immediately after the dynastic Stanley Cup years. LaFontaine had an immediate effect and inspired hockey historian Andrew Podniek to write, "Pat's career was nothing short of fantastic." An adroit trade brought him to Uniondale in a curiously circuitous way.
Pat LaFontaine was one of the first great American-born players in the NHL. Instead of playing college hockey, LaFontaine played in the Canadian major junior system, with the Verdun Juniors of the Québec Major Junior Hockey League in 1982-83. He was then drafted by the New York Islanders in the first round, #3 overall, in the 1983 NHL entry draft.
