Words and Music, a fictionalized biopic of lyricist Lorenz Hart (Mickey Rooney), is an above-average MGM musical from director Norman Taurog.As a biopic focused on the songwriting duo of Hart and composer Richard Rodgers (Tom Drake), the musical numbers play like a greatest hits collection, and the strength of the tunes is a clear strength of the film overall.

The film features a cavalcade of stars: Perry Como (in an acting role throughout the film), Judy Garland, Lena Horn, June Allyson, Gene Kelly & Vera Ellen.

Mickey Rooney, as Lorenz Hart, gets most of the screen time in Words and Music. Rooney, still alive and kicking as the twentieth century gets ready to fade into the sunset, is regarded as something of a joke today, if he’s noticed at all. Yet in his heyday, he really was “the biggest star in Hollywood,” as he’ll be glad to tell you.
Words and Music is one of those films that is heavily flawed but is still a pleasure to watch. The failures are mainly to do with the biographical parts, with anachronistic and rather stilted dialogue, an underwritten and stodgily paced story that takes truth liberties to the extent that Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart just don't seem very interesting and the heavier dramatic elements seemed ...
