Synopsis: Elfrida and Oscar intend to celebrate the Christmas Season very simply after moving to Sutherland in the north of Scotland in November.
Elfrida (Sinéad Cusack) tries to help out her neighbour who just lost his family, while looking after heart-broken niece Carrie and her little sister Lucy. Christmas will bring some unwanted turbulence into the lives of these ladies and their chosen gentlemen.
Rosamund Pilcher's "Winter Solstice is a long, finely-crafted romantic novel of great subtlety and style. To reduce it to a two hour movie was a challenge utterly beyond this production. The plot is changed wholly uneccesarily and what is left is a film in which the characters are cyphers and the events arbitrary and often cringe-making.
Synopsis. When Elfrida Philips abandons London for a country village, she settles in quickly. She is very poor, but has a tiny cottage, her four-legged friend Horace, and friendships of good neighbors. Tragedy upsets her newfound tranquillity, and she takes refuge in a rambling house with a new gentleman friend in Corrydale.
