With the Busby Berkeley input The Singing Kid (1936) is purely a 'show & joke' type of affair. Jolson got a superb team surrounding him creating a heavyweight musical. Fun and past paced, but not much done to engage the story. The tone of humor also felt a bit off. There is plenty to laugh at, but a lot of it feel phony.

16 feb 2011 · Jolson's film, "The Singing Kid" (1936), showed the old-fashioned content of Jolson’s past while maintaining some of his modernist form and style. It included Cab Calloway performing some of his own songs, and the film wanted to both erase and celebrate boundaries and differences, including most emphatically the color line.
