Mysterious Island is a rich adventure film from Charles H. Schneer and Columbia that sees Harryhausen showing off his spectacular special effects in almost every minute. As lush as it is in atmosphere, with its beautiful matte paintings and sweeping Bernard Herrman score, it's just as feeble in its plot about a group of stale Civil War soldiers trying to survive in the wild.
