The way that Annie is treated early on is something that really requires turning a blind eye to see as something to fondly reminisce over. However, when this gets to the point of Annie's 'acceptance' (if taken at face value and not in some more patronizing manner), I think there is something to Annie's decision to think about America as her home and not just where she lives.
