Grey entered Parliament in 1786 and soon became prominent among the aristocratic Whigs, led by Charles James Fox, in opposition to William Pitt’s conservative government. In 1806 Grey became first lord of the Admiralty in Lord Grenville’s government, and, when Fox died the same year, Grey became foreign secretary and leader of the Foxite Whigs.
