Torei Enji (1721–1792) received the posthumous imperial title of Butsugo–shinsho Zenji. After having followed Kogetsu Zenzai (1667–1751), Torei became the disciple of Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769), one of the major figures in the Rinzai revival of the eighteenth century. Many of Torei's works remain unpublished, even in Japan.

An influential monk and prolific painter, Hakuin Ekaku made striking and sometimes humorous pictures that played an important role in his teaching. Dozens of half-length portraits of Bodhidharma (Japanese: Daruma), the Indian monk credited with transmitting Zen Buddhist teachings to China in the sixth century, can be dated to the last few decades of the artist’s life.

Hakuin Ekaku (1686–1769 or 1685–1768) was one of the most influential figures in Japanese Zen Buddhism. He revived the Rinzai school from a moribund period of stagnation, refocusing it on its traditionally rigorous training methods integrating meditation and koan practice.
