Otto was the eldest son of the Duke Otto I of Brunswick-Harburg (1495–1549) from his marriage to Metta von Campen (died 1580). Otto received a princely education. The House of Brunswick-Lüneburg did not recognize Otto's right to inherit his father's lordship on the grounds that the marriage between his parents had been morganatic.

Life. Otto was born on 24 August 1495 as the eldest son of Henry the Middle and his wife, Margarete of Saxony. Like his brothers, Ernest and Francis he studied at Wittenberg and was affected early on by the reformatory ideas of Martin Luther and was later a driving force behind the introduction of the Reformation in the Principality of Lüneburg.

Edvige (1580-1657), sposò nel 1621 il duca Ottone III di Brunswick-Harburg (1572-1641). Dopo che Giulio si riconciliò con il padre, Enrico II, che accettò con riluttanza il matrimonio di suo figlio con una protestante, la coppia ricevette i castelli in Assia e Schladen.
Ottone I di Brunswick-Harburg (24 agosto 1495 – Harburg, 11 agosto 1549) fu duca di Brunswick-Lüneburg. Governò il Principato di Lüneburg dal 1520 al 1527 e successivamente fu signore di Harburg dal 1527 fino alla sua morte.
