Theo van Doesburg (Dutch: [ˈteːjoː vɑn ˈduzbʏr(ə)x]; 30 August 1883 – 7 March 1931) was a Dutch artist, who practiced painting, writing, poetry and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leader of De Stijl. He was married to artist, pianist and choreographer Nelly van Doesburg.

Theo van Doesburg was born Christian Emil Marie Küpper on 30 August 1883, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, as the son of the photographer Wilhelm Küpper (nl) and Henrietta Catherina Margadant. After a short training in acting and singing he decided to become a painter.
According to Joop Joosten, Van Doesburg’s stay at Mondrian’s house in Paris in February 1920 would be decisive in his full-fledged conversion to abstraction. Furthermore, as can be appreciated, the grid structure that Mondrian and Huszár had employed at the end of 1918, before Van Doesburg did so, is not a rigid and even system for him as it was for Mondrian, but is flexible and uneven.
