Alfred Döblin was born in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) in 1878. His father was a tailor, who ran away to America with a much younger employee but was stranded in Hamburg when the escapade failed. Döblin’s mother moved the family of five children to Berlin, where she had relatives. She was of Jewish origin but the family was not orthodox.
