William Carlos Williams (September 17, 1883 – March 4, 1963) was an American poet, writer, and physician of Latin American descent closely associated with modernism and imagism. In addition to writing, Williams was a physician practicing both pediatrics and general medicine.
He was known as an experimenter, an innovator, a revolutionary figure in American poetry. Yet in comparison to artists of his own time who sought a new environment for creativity as expatriates in Europe, Williams lived a remarkably conventional life.
