The Origin of the Gakushuin A public school was established on the east side of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto in 1847 . In 1849, Emperor Komei designated (an imperial edict) "Gakushuin” thereby giving the University its name. After entering the Meiji period in 1877, a courtier nobility school was setup in Nishiki-cho, Kanda.
Meiji era August 1888: Gakushuin is relocated to the former site of the Imperial College of Engineering in Sannen-chō, Kōjimachi-ku (Toranomon). Meiji era July 1889: The Peeresses' School is relocated to Nagata-chō, Kōjimachi-ku. Meiji era September 1890: Gakushuin is relocated to Owari-chō, Yotsuya-ku. Meiji era August 1908
After the Meiji Restoration of 1868 Gakushuin became the "The Peers' School", under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Imperial Household. The school has had a long and distinguished history, and many of its graduates have achieved positions of prominence in politics and academia, as well as in a variety of cultural and artistic fields.

General rankings. The university was ranked 72nd in 2010 (63rd in 2009, 78th in 2008) in the Truly Strong Universities ranking issued by Toyo Keizai.
