Lyon was an educated man who lived at HarrowontheHill, now in North West London as a wealthy farmer, he was able to endow Harrow School, and this led to the foundation of The John Lyon

The Charter he obtained from Queen Elizabeth I dated February 19, 1572, explicitly stated that he was re-endowing an existing school. There is clear evidence of a school at Harrow before 1572; Lyon himself made provision to support its functions during his lifetime.
