  4. 1 mar 2017 · Three years later Father Anthony Maraschi, born in Piedmont, Italy, arrived in San Francisco after serving in the East. Maraschi laid the groundwork amid sand dunes south of Market Street for St. Ignatius Academy (the present-day University of San Francisco).

  5. Founded by the Jesuits in 1855 as St. Ignatius Academy, USF started as a one-room schoolhouse along Market Street in what later became downtown San Francisco. Father Anthony Maraschi was the college's founder and first president, a professor, the college's treasurer, and the first pastor of St. Ignatius Church.
