The revolutionaries routed 12,000 federal soldiers, killing 8,000 and capturing 5,000 more along with much of the federal army's artillery. The battle effectively ended the Victoriano Huerta regime.

He was aided by two teenaged accomplices, David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley.
