He was active in both fields from 1876 to 1928, and collected fossils for Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel C. Marsh, and for the British Museum, the San Diego Natural History Museum and other museums.

He and his twin brother, Edward, moved to Kansas in 1867 and lived for several years on a ranch 2 miles south of Fort Harker (Kanopolis, Kansas) that was owned by their older brother, Dr. George M. Sternberg , the Army surgeon at Fort Harker.
