(The WR dictionary has excellent entries for both sinister and apparition. The dictionary is available at the top of the page. It might give you a better picture of the words' connotations.)

  4. 29 mar 2017 · Mar 29, 2017. #8. I think the effect of 'eres un maldito,' 'damn you,' 'SOB,' and similar expressions, depends on the tone and the circumstances. It's not unusual to say "qué maldito" in situations far less dramatic or severe than being eaten alive by zombies, at least where I come from, and 'damn you' can be pretty strong in the proper context.

  8. 16 set 2019 · At their edges rose the virgin forests, dark and cool even in the hottest noons, mysterious, a little sinister, the soughing pines seeming to wait with an ageold patience, to threaten with soft sighs: “Be careful! Be careful! We had you once. We can take you back again.”. The source is from "Gone with the Wind" by Magaret Mitchel.

  9. 4 ago 2022 · On the drive to a restaurant, Gatsby states that Jordan would, in his place, reveal to Nick a secret request. After this revelation, Nick notes that "correctness" grew on Gatsby. I hadn’t the faintest idea what “this matter” was, but I was more annoyed than interested. I hadn’t asked Jordan to tea in order to discuss Mr. Jay Gatsby.

  10. 5 ago 2018 · As Hermione told you in post #3, "courtesy" is used as a term of politeness or respect. In Fitzgerald's use of "courtesy bay", he is telling you that it is a courtesy to call that insignificant stretch of water "a bay". This is an example of Fitzgerald's humor.
