The Tragically Hip, often referred to simply as the Hip, were a Canadian rock band formed in Kingston, Ontario in 1984, consisting of vocalist Gord Downie, guitarist Paul Langlois, guitarist Rob Baker (known as Bobby Baker until 1994), bassist Gord Sinclair, and drummer Johnny Fay.

Gord Sinclair (bass guitar) and Johnny Fay (drums) grew up across the street from each other and have been best friends since they were infants. They met Gord Downie (vocals) and Rob Baker (lead guitar) in high school in Kingston, Ontario. They formed the Tragically Hip in 1983 with saxophonist Davis Manning.

And for the 6,700 people – including prime minister Justin Trudeau – singing O Canada inside Kingston’s K-Rock Centre, at the final gig by the city’s proudest sons and definitive Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip, it was to be a moving farewell.
