The second son of William Henry Vanderbilt, from whom he inherited $60 million, he was for a time active in the management of the family railroads, though not much after 1903.

10 mar 2010 · ' Idle Hour ', the William Kissam Vanderbilt estate designed by Richard Howland Hunt (of Hunt & Hunt) c. 1899 in Oakdale (with an addition by Warren & Wetmore c. 1902). Vanderbilt first built his estate in Oakdale in 1878 as a hunting retreat but the house burned down in 1899 (the first was designed by Richard Morris Hunt ).
William Kissam Vanderbilt was a co-owner of the yacht "Defender" which won the 1895 America's Cup. His son Harold Sterling Vanderbilt would later take over his father's interest in America's Cup racing.
William Kissam Vanderbilt II was born on 2 March 1878 to William Vanderbilt and Alva Krskine Smith in New York City. William married Virginia Graham Fair in 1899. They had three children: William Kissam III, Muriel, and Consuelo. They separated after ten years, but were not divorced until 1927.
