Gli MC5 sono stati un gruppo di musica rock statunitense fondato a Detroit. Il loro nome è la sigla di Motor City 5. Gli MC5 sono considerati tra i più influenti gruppi americani di sempre, assieme ai Velvet Underground e i concittadini Stooges. e tra le pietre d'angolo del genere punk.
La storia racconta che nel 1964, a Lincoln Park, nello stato del Michigan, si formarono i Motor City Five, la cui line-up era costituita dal cantante Rob Tyner, dai chitarristi Fred "Sonic" Smith (futuro marito di Patti Smith) e Wayne Kramer, dal bassista Pat Burrows e dal batterista Bob Gaspar.
