ABOUT THE ARTIST. David Bierk was born in Appleton, Minnesota in 1944 and died in 2002. He received both a B.A. and an M.A. from Humboldt State University, Arcata, California. He also attended California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland.
Using images of voluptuous table settings, flowers, landscapes, fragments of text and replications of famous artworks, he examined concepts of history, memory, art history, evolution and eternity. Bierk was one of the first artists to adopt appropriation as a legitimate means to art-making.
A passionate painter and a prolific exhibitor, Bierk successfully established an international reputation for his work. He had eight children and lived and painted in Peterborough until his death from leukemia in August 2002.
