James Arthur Payne (1894 – June 12, 1968) was an American fly rod maker, designer and business owner. He was born in Highland Mills, New York. The son of E.F. Payne and the owner of the E.F. Payne Rod Company, Payne designed and built bamboo fly rods for almost 70 years. His rods are prized by fishermen and collectors.
The band formed in 1988 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and consists of Kevin Griffin (vocals and guitar), Tom Drummond (bass guitar), Michael Jerome (drums), and James Arthur Payne Jr. (guitar, keyboards). The band has released nine studio albums, most recently 2024's Super Magick.

Griffin and Drummond decided to keep Better than Ezra going by hiring a new guitarist/keyboardist, James Arthur Payne Jr., and a new drummer, Travis McNabb.
