The song was a hit in Italy in the summer of 1988, spending nine weeks at Number 1. [9] Later in 1988 a WEA Italiana compilation Loving You, containing mainly extended versions of previous singles, reached number 7 on the Italian album charts.
Nick Kamen released a version in 1987, where it went to number 16 in the UK Singles Chart. Lola Borg of Smash Hits panned the song she described as an "outrage" to the original version and a "shocking business", adding it was "murdered" by Kamen who "reduce[d] it to utter mush".
Kamen era richiestissimo per interviste e apparizioni. Questo fece sì che a fine 1988 Nick pubblicasse solamente per l'Italia il disco di remix Loving You, contenente l'inedito Don't Hold out e versioni riarrangiate di alcuni successi dei primi due album.
