Francis Ernest of Hesse-Darmstadt (born 25 January 1695 in Gießen; died: 8 January 1716 in Darmstadt) was a German nobleman. He was the third son of Count Landgrave Ernest Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt (1667–1739) from his marriage to Dorothea Charlotte (1661–1705), daughter of the Margrave Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach .
Ernest Louis was the elder son of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was named Louis after his father. His nickname was "Ernie".
Children of Philip I, divided the land between them: William IV received Kassel. Louis IV received Marburg, which after his childless death was divided between his brothers; Philip II received Rheinfels, which after his childless death was divided between his brothers; George I received Darmstadt. Seeheim was sold as well, leaving the family with Schloss Wolfsgarten; it remains the seat of the present head of the House, Prince Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse. Throughout the 1920s, Ernie and his family enjoyed considerable popularity in Darmstadt.

Ernest Louis was the grand duke of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1892 until his abdication in 1918, at the end of World War I. His father was the grand duke Louis IV, whom he succeeded on March 13, 1892, and his mother was Princess Alice, daughter of Queen Victoria of England and the prince consort, Albert.
