The Pardoner’s Prologue details his methods of swindling poor and fearful people in exchange for the “pardons” of sin he can bestow as a representative of the Church.
As a moral tale told by a vicious man, it challenges many of the prescriptions of medieval literary theory, and so offers itself as two tales at once depending on the angle from which it is read.
