Abu al-Abbas Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah, known by his laqab al-Saffah, was the first caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate, one of the longest and most important caliphates in Islamic history.
Abu al-Abbas as-Saffah (ä´bōō äl-äbäs´ äs-säfä´), d. 754, 1st Abbasid caliph (749–54). Raised to the caliphate by the armed might of Abu Muslim, he took the reign name as-Saffah [shedder of blood].
Abul Abbas led the Abbasid revolution that overthrew the Omyyads in 749. He eliminated the corrupt power of the Omayyads in Damascus and initiated the dynasty of the Abbasids. Abbas safeguarded his victory by killing most of the surviving members of the Omyyad house.
