He succeeded as the 6th Lord Home, a Lord of Parliament in the Peerage of Scotland, in 1575, and he was created Earl of Home in the Peerage of Scotland in 1605.

  6. Alexander 1st Earl of Home. Alexander, 6th Lord Home, succeeded his father in the offices of sheriff of Berwick and bailie of Lauderdale. He was much trusted by James VI. and was very instrumental in suppressing the insurrection of Bothwell in 1592, for which service he was rewarded with the lands of the suppressed priory of Coldinghame.
