Like Asura (阿修羅のごとく, Ashura no Gotoku) is a 2003 Japanese film directed by Yoshimitsu Morita. At the 27th Japan Academy Prize it won three awards and received ten other nominations. The film is a remake of the TV mini series Ashura no Gotoku on NHK.
If you liked Kengan Ashura or Hinomaru Sumo, you'd like the other because both have characters that display their skills in martial arts when they go head to head in matches. And both of the protagonists have the dream of becoming the strongest.
8 nov 2003 · The "Asura" of the title refers to a Hindu goddess whose beautiful face belies her tempestuous nature. In the film, the first Asura-like character we meet is the excitable Takiko (Eri Fukatsu), the third daughter of the Takezawa clan, who calls her three sisters together for an emergency meeting.
Set in 1979, with impeccable technical credits and precision comic acting, LIKE ASURA manages to make the Takezawa sisters complicated and contradictory; easy to criticize, but instantly-identifiable; fatally-flawed, but deeply sympathetic – in other words, they feel like real sisters.
