The Blackheath Proprietary School was an educational establishment founded in 1830. In the 19th century, it had a profound influence on the game of football, in both Association and Rugby codes. In 1863, the school became one of the founders of The Football Association.
Blackheath Proprietary School. Established to give its pupils an education similar to that of the public schools. It was so called as it was owned by a group of a hundred share holding proprietors who could send or nominate a pupil.

Blackheath Proprietary School 1860. In 1848 the 25 year old Revd Edward John Selwyn took over headmaster. The school at that time had 48 pupils; when he resigned in 1864 it had 275 boys and 15 masters.
