Grey joined the Council as a part of this group. In July 1551 his wife's youngest half-brother, Charles Brandon, 3rd Duke of Suffolk, died without a male heir and the dukedom of Suffolk became extinct. Henry Grey was created Duke of Suffolk on 4 October 1551, in the same ceremony that elevated John Dudley to the Dukedom of Northumberland.

Henry Grey, duke of Suffolk (born c. 1517—died Feb. 23, 1554, London) was the father of Lady Jane Grey. His opposition to Queen Mary I of England and his role in Sir Thomas Wyatt’s rebellion led to his execution.

Supported his daughter Jane's claim to the throne. Pardoned, but later executed for supporting a rebellion against Mary I and her marriage to Philip of Spain.
Henry Grey was born on 17th January 1517 at Bradgate in Leicestershire. He was the eldest son of Thomas Grey, 2nd Marquess of Dorset, and the marquess's second wife, Margaret Wotton, who was the widow of William Medley.
