Following the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, higher education within the country was moved to Helsinki, the new administrative heart and the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland, in 1828, and renamed the Imperial Alexander University in Finland in honour of the late benefactor of the university.

In 1828, the university was moved to Helsinki and it started operating under the name of the “Imperial Alexander University”. In 1832 , the university building designed by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel was inaugurated while the new library building north of the university building was inaugurated in 1845 .
The chosen archival material encompasses the documents and other resources kept in archives by the Royal Academy of Turku and the Imperial Alexander University, the predecessors of the University of Helsinki, from 1640 to 1924. The archives constitute an integral part of Finland’s national documentary heritage.
