In northern England around 1900, the worker John O'Brien lives near poverty in a small house in the worker's district. He falls in love with Mary, the teacher of his highly intelligent younger sister Kathy and daughter of a rich family.
Set against the turbulent background of poverty, bigotry, and class division in Northern England at the turn of the 1900s, a Tyneside laborer and the daughter of a wealthy shipbuilder find love, throwing both of their worlds into turmoil as they struggle to find love across class divides.
