The Defence of a Fool (French: Le Plaidoyer d'un fou) is an autobiographical novel by the Swedish writer August Strindberg. The narrative is a lightly fictionalized account of his life from 1874 to 1887, and especially of his first marriage to Siri von Essen (called Maria in the novel).

In his work In Behalf of the Fool, Gaunilo contends that St Anselm's ontological argument fails because logic of the same kind would force one to conclude many things exist which certainly do not. An empiricist, Gaunilo thought that the human intellect is only able to comprehend information provided by the senses.

Gaunilo argued by analogy, pointing out that one’s concept of a “perfect island” does not imply that such a place exists.

While not himself a first-rate thinker – that is clear from the brief text of his that has been preserved – he undertook to debate with one of the genius theologian-philosophers of the Western tradition, namely, Anselm.
