Years active. 1993–present. Thamsanqa Shabalala (born September 29, 1974) is a member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, [1] [2] a South African choral group founded in 1960 by his father Joseph. He replaced Joseph as the group's lead singer after his father's retirement in 2015 (see main article for more information).

In January 2008, Shabalala announced that his youngest son, Thamsanqa, would take over as leader of Ladysmith Black Mambazo when the time came for Joseph to retire from international touring. That time came in early 2014, when Shabalala sat out a three-month tour, although he continued to sing on special occasions.

Joseph Shabalala, the South African vocal group’s late founder, was on a quest to refine isicathamiya, a musical genre that emerged from apartheid-era mines. One night, he dreamt his grandmother told him to join forces with his second cousin Albert Mazibuko and his brother if he wanted to succeed.
Formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, Ladysmith Black Mambazo became one of South Africa's most prolific musical groups.
