The British origins of McGooley are evident in the influence of two outstanding British sitcoms of the era, Steptoe and Son and Till Death Us do Part. The elder Steptoe is a forerunner of Chater’s more lovable McGooley and there are touches of Harold Steptoe’s aspirations and self-delusion in Meillon’s Wally Stiller.
Overview. My Name's McGooley, What's Yours? was a popular Australian situation comedy series produced by ATN7 from 1966 to 1968. The situation involved a young couple, Wally and Rita Stiller, living in Balmain with Rita's father Dominic McGooley. Also in the regular cast was Stewart Ginn, and later Noeline Brown joined.
My Name’s McGooley, What’s Yours? – End of the Line ( 1967) McGooley, starring Gordon Chater and set in Balmain in the ’60s, was Australia’s first homegrown sitcom success. Length: 30 minutes. Dominic McGooley (Gordon Chater) fishes from the old Balmain wharf as the opening titles are played out against a backdrop of Sydney Harbour, with a noticeably lower city skyline than the one we see today. Only the Harbour Bridge’s familiar coat-hanger shape is instantly recognisable.
