Founded in 1897 as first Russian Medical Institute for Women, for more than 60 years it was known all over the world as the First Leningrad I.P. Pavlov Medical Institute. The present name, St Petersburg State I.P. Pavlov Medical University, was given to our University in 1994 by the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation
It became the Women’s Medical Institute of St. Petersburg in 1918 and renamed as First Medical Institute of Leningrad in 1924. It was again renamed in 1936, in honour of Nobel Prize winner Ivan Pavlov. In 1994 the institute was upgraded to a medical university and inaugurated as Pavlov Saint Petersburg State Medical University.

Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University is one of the leading medical universities in Russia founded in 1897 as “Medical Institute for Women.” Until 1916, male medical aspirants were not admitted to the University! Since its inception, it has trained over 60,000 medical aspirants.
