Gábor Tompa (born 8 August 1957 in Târgu Mureș) is an internationally renowned Hungarian theater and film director, poet, essayist and teacher. Between 2007 and 2016 he was the Head of Directing at the Theatre and Dance Department of the University of California, San Diego.
Gabor Tompa received his training at the Theatre and Film Academy in Bucharest, Romania and began working as a professional director in 1981. Since then, he has directed more than 100 productions worldwide including plays by Shakespeare, Moliere, Chekhov, Beckett, Bulgakhov, Büchner, Camus and Ionesco.
Since 1981 Gábor Tompa has been directing at the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj, Romania. In 1987 he became the artistic director of the theatre and after the political changes he undertook the managment of the theatre as well.
Tompa Gábor (Marosvásárhely, 1957. augusztus 8. –) erdélyi magyar-amerikai UNITER-díjas színházi rendező, érdemes művész, a Kolozsvári Állami Magyar Színház igazgatója és főrendezője, egyetemi oktató, színészpedagógus, költő.
Gábor Tompa (b. 8 August 1957) is a Hungarian director from Romania, winner of numerous awards (four times Best Director of the Year in Romania, Best Foreign Show of the Year in England, etc.) and widely recognised in Europe for his physically adventurous and conceptually daring productions of classic plays.
