Jimmy Ernst was the son of the German painter Max Ernst and spent his childhood surrounded by Dada and surrealist artists. Paul Klee taught Jimmy’s mother how to change her son’s diapers, and Man Ray was one of the first people to teach the boy English.

Having been forced to move from his native Germany to New York in 1938 when he was 18 years old, Jimmy Ernst joined a group of young artists experimenting with surrealist painting techniques in New York City in the mid-20th century and became a U.S. citizen in 1952.
Jimmy Ernst, Abstract-Surrealist Painter and second-generation member of the New York School of Abstraction, arrived in New York in 1938 on the S.S. Manhattan. He was the only son of Surrealist, Max Ernst and Journalist, Louise Straus-Ernst; who perished in Auschwitz in 1944.
