Jerome Increase Case (December 11, 1819 – December 22, 1891) was an early American manufacturer of threshing machines. He founded the J. I. Case Company which has gone through many mergers and name changes to today's Case Corporation.
The Case Corporation was a manufacturer of agricultural machinery and construction equipment. Founded, in 1842, by Jerome Increase Case as the J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company, it operated under that name for most of a century. For another 66 years it was the J. I. Case Company, and was often called simply Case.
Jerome Increase Case was a young man of 23 in 1842 when he left Oswego County, New York. His destination was Rochester, Wisconsin Territory. Case had read that the country around Rochester was the wheat center of the mid-west, and he planned to begin his career as a thresherman there.
Jerome Increase Case (1819-1891) Before machines were developed to do the work, a man could thresh six or seven bushels in a day’s work, just as farmers had for centuries. Jerome Case did not invent the first threshing machine. In fact his father sold a crude version imported from England when Jerome was a boy in Oswego County, New York.
1842: Jerome Increase Case founds the Racine Threshing Machine Works in Racine, Wisconsin. He innovates the current thresher and separated the straw from the grain. 1847: In Chicago, Cyrus McCormick founds the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company which will later become International Harvester.
