Soon, the band hired Ray Tabano, a childhood friend of Tyler, as rhythm guitarist and began playing local shows. Aerosmith played their first gig in Mendon, Massachusetts at Nipmuc Regional High School (now Miscoe Hill Middle School) on November 6, 1970.
Solo nel 1971 avviene il primo cambio interno, quando Brad Whitford sostituisce Ray Tabano; quest'ultimo resterà comunque vicino alla band, disegnandone anche il logo. Il 24 agosto dello stesso anno Brad suona il suo primo concerto insieme agli Aerosmith al the Savage Beast in Cavendish, Vermont.
Formed in October 1970, the group originally included vocalist Steven Tyler, lead guitarist Joe Perry, rhythm guitarist Ray Tabano, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer, although Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford early the following year.
