Blues Image was formed in Tampa, Florida in 1966 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Mike Pinera, singer-drummer Manuel "Manny" Bertematti, singer-percussionist Joe Lala, and bassist Malcolm Jones. They were later joined by keyboardist Frank "Skip" Konte.
Frank Konte joined Three Dog Night, and Manuel Bertematti and Mike Pinera performed at various times with Iron Butterfly and other bands. Joe Lala became a highly sought-after session musician who worked with such top acts as Joe Walsh and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
The other founding members consisted of Manuel “Manny” Bertematti on vocals and drums, Joe Lala on percussions and vocals, Emilio Garcia (no, not the Emilio Gracia) on keyboards, and Malcolm Jones on bass guitar.
